Decrepit room in black and white

Still an old photo I took back on a training day with Angel Sanguinetti (check out his blog btw, some great photos there too).

This is a room in a castle that has not seen any renovations in probably 60 or more years. It was a fun subject to shoot, the old wall-paper, the single light bulb hanging from the ceiling and the smoked walls from the chimney all make for some great tectures.

About my camera, well despite lots of emails back and forth with Air Berlin, even their customer service supervisor doesn’t seem to think they did anything wrong. It’s unfortunate how a company can act that way, at the end of the day it was stolen while in their responsibility and had it been something else (for the same value) they would have paid it back. And now because it was a camera – not even a single euro!

Well the good news is that due to a couple of friends I will be getting a Nikon D300 which is quite an upgrade from my earlier camera so I will be back shooting soon. I spent a week in Manhattan recently and got to go by B&H to buy some equipment and wow, that was like Christmas. I will definitely be going back there again.

Well enjoy the photo. It’s not HDR just a single shot with a pretty wide angle lens.

  1. B&H is wonderful isn’t it? I haven’t been to the store yet myself, but I routinely order supplies online and just received the summer catalog yesterday. I made me ridiculously giddy! Like Christmas as you said.

  2. A castle you say? Gorgeous photo. These sorts of places really drive me mad with imagination. It’s almost like you can hear whispers of their history. And this photo captures that madness perfectly.

    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Lovely shot! I really like how you rendered the light. Is that done like a sun flare, by stopping down the aperture? I’ve never tried that with artificial light sources. Great news about your camera! A substantial upgrade can go a long way towards making one feel better about the situation. ;-) Enjoy!

Thank you. We’re very pleased your visit was so enjoyable.

  5. selagon, yes I took a copy of the catalog as well. Not only is it cheaper it’s just better service and a friendly approach.
somethinewplease, you are so right – going around these old places totally drives one mad with imagination. It’s a castle but not the fortified type. More like a very very large manor.
Avital, absolutely an upgrade is the only way to go with these situations. Yes the flare is done by turning down the f stops to 16. I thought it would give the picture some sort of central point.
Thanks to all and Henry, it’s a pleasure and I will definitely be going back! Plus I told all my friend to go as well. :-)

  6. Thanks for the visit and the compliment. Means a lot coming from a real photographer as opposed to my amateur adventures in the art. Looking forward to seeing future pieces.
